Bastion Fanfarinet is the nephew of Fanfarinet from Princess Mayblossom, a fairytale by Madame D'Aulnoy.
+
Bastion Fanfarinet [he/him] is the nephew of Ambassador Fanfarinet from the Princess Mayblossom, a fairytale by Madame D'Aulnoy.

  +
At fourteen, he was chosen to follow in his uncle’s footsteps as the next villain of the fairytale. However, during the events of The Manhunt, Bastion managed to find his cousin – his uncle’s son – to take the role instead.
The heir of one of France's most famous villain families, 'Bas' is an enigma who seems to simultaneously live in mystery and the public eye. On one hand, he's first violin for one of EAH's many orchestras, a premier debater on one of EAH's debate teams and the treasurer of the elusive underground Host Club. On the other hand, he's just another face in the crowd of punk-looking villains.

  +
Since then, Bastion has left Ever After High, claiming he had the intention of taking an internship at the House of Adalinda. However, his circumstances are currently unknown and his current conditions are a mystery. Due to this, his last will and testament has been produced by his lawyer, and all references to him shall be in past tense.
No one really knows what lies under the charming, bad boy exterior. Despite being a future diplomat, Bas rarely makes a statement on what movements or beliefs he truly stands for, except for some sort of resent towards authority. When everything he does simply looks like an act, then who is the man and who is the legacy?

Personality
  +
God hath given you one face and you make yourself another.Back in Ever After High, people didn’t really know Bastion Fanfarinet. And certainly, he didn’t really want to be known.
im gonna rewrite all of this lol

  +
Externally, he had appeared proper, serious and boring. His decorum and etiquette was impeccable, he hardly stumbled over his words or made a fool of himself. He was rule-biding, loyal to his fairytale author, and in a phrase, lawful neutral.
Hobbies & Interests
Violin: Out of all the instruments that he had picked up, violin is the only one Bastion has stuck with. Perhaps it's the lightness of the instrument, or the romanticism, or the ease of play, but whatever it is, Bastion will admit that playing the violin is one of the few things that calms him down.

  +
Beyond that mask, Bastion had been way too uptight. He had plagued himself with overthinking, with the fear of messing up in the public eye. He was constantly afraid of saying the wrong thing or doing things the wrong way. Although he had seemed calm and unaffected by criticism, he would frequently conflate every remark made about him out of proportion and stress over innocuous comments.
Orchestra: Likewise, Bastion is a first-violinist in one of Ever After High's orchestras.

  +
That uptight nature had manifested in how prepared and how rehearsed he seemed. Conversations and speeches would be practised in the shower; cue cards were tucked in his inner blazer pocket. Each phrase from his mouth would be an attempt to look agreeable in other people’s eyes, a plea not to draw any attention to himself. This meant saying things or doing things that he disagreed with – but what was the point of being true to yourself when all you feel is fake?
Chamber Band: He's also in a chamber music group with Icarus Juniper on piano. [and possibly some other members as well, I'm still working out the basics].

  +
And certainly, beneath his lawful surface, Bastion Fanfarinet did harbour several radical values. He had never made these clear or revealed them during his lifetime, due to his pushover nature and his constant desire not to draw notice to himself.
Debate: A member of Ever After High's Senior Premier Team, Bastion is a masterful debater, easily able to express convincing and well-put arguments. Often is second person, on the same team as Pythia Adalinda and Estella Shalott

  +
Bastion Fanfarinet never particularly wanted to be remembered. He had wanted everyone who knew of him to forget about him. He had wished that his name would fall into obscurity.
Model United Nations: Bastion is a regular representative and delegate and uses this as an opportunity to simulate an actual parliament hall.

  +
Without a doubt, this final wish has been fulfilled.
Charity Projects: More out of obligation (he's a diplomat's kid, he has to look charitable to be presentable) than actual interest. Honestly this is probably more of a ploy to take selfies with poor kids and to feel a false sense of being humbled.

Appearance
Appearance
  +
There are daggers in men's smiles.Bastion had looked like one of those impossibly perfect people with their life together. Although he certainly never had a life, but with a certain pretty boy charm, being well-dressed and well-put together, he was good at faking that appearance.
Bastion is of French (white) heritage on his mother's side, and Chinese-Korean heritage on his father's. Therefore he is biracial and Eurasian, with olive skin, almond eyes and (naturally) dark hair. He's generally regarded as pretty-looking, though he wonders whether most of it comes from certain stereotypes associated with Eurasians. :(

  +
He had been slim, concerningly so. Although of average height, his skinniness had given him the appearance of being taller than he was.
He has straight hair that sometimes covers his right eye. It's also usually dyed some unnatural colour, but is usually pink.

  +
Additionally, he had been of Eurasian heritage, with a white French mother and a Chinese-Korean father. He had been vividly part-Asian and was not white-passing - with olive skin and double-lidded medium brown eyes. His hair was naturally black, but usually dyed pink, since he had been forced to conform to the villain aesthetic.
Also tall. Five feet ten.

  +
His face had been uncannily symmetrical and he had a decent looking jawline. He hardly smiles – a shame, for if he did, one would notice he had dimples.

Perhaps Bastion was most well-known for being a member of one of EAH’s Premier Debating Teams. He had been in the team with Pythia, and was often joked to be her “right hand man”. Additionally, he had been a representative of Model UN and volunteered to help out with certain charity projects.

  +
His multilinguality of seven languages meant that he was frequently used as a translator for English-poor students at Ever After High. He also played violin for one of EAH’s Orchestras, though he was not particularly memorable for it.
Princess Mayblossom is born, but a fairytale named Carabosse curses her to be miserable for 20 years. Thus, the princess was put into a tower to prevent any harm to her.

  +
Outside of that, not many people can list any additional information about Bastion did for fun. In fact, one doubts that Bastion Fanfarinet could even comprehend the concept of fun.
When Mayblossom was nearly 20, her parents decided that she must be married, so they sent her portrait to every legible prince. King Merlin sent his ambassador, Fanfarinet, to make an offer for his son, but Mayblossom swiftly fell in love with Fanfarinet instead, and convinced him to run away with her, taking her father's dagger and her mother's headdress.

  +
Linguistics and Literature
A chancellor realised that the princess was missing, and the nurses told him about the princess and Fanfarinet. They later found from a man that he rowed the couple to an island.

  +
What use was there for seven languages, when one knew he wouldn’t live past his twenties? Was it to merely maintain an educated, cultured appearance? Was it – dare one day – out of interest? Surely, it couldn’t have been a ’’real’’ interest in linguistics, if one never bothered to pick up Latin or Ancient Greek or any root languages?
At the island, you probably expect the Ambassador and the Princess to be happy. Nah. Turns out that Fanfarinet was actually a huge jerk, a lazy arse, and wasn't very nice to the princess at all. Later, while the admiral men land on the island to search for Mayblossom and Fanfarinet, Mayblossom made Fanfarinet invisible with her mother's headdress, and he ended up killing the men.

  +
Fairytales
Later, Fanfarinet turned on the princess, about to kill her as well, but instead Mayblossom stabbed him in the face and threw him down a cliff.

  +
He adores Madame D’Aulnoy. Praises her and her contributions to the fairytale world to the high heavens themselves. She had been a constant in his life, and reading her tales made him want to strive to preserve her memory in collective fairytale conscience.
When Mayblossom went home, her 20 years were up, and ended up married to King Merlin's son, who was hella rad.

  +
Although severely disliking being a fairytale legacy himself, Bastion had always harboured an interest in fairytales. He’s read a good majority of fairytales, and knows the Aarne-Thompson classification like the back of his hand. Bastion Fanfarinet had been so genre-savvy that it was almost illegal, and could speak on fairytales as if he was part of the authorities themselves.
How does Bastion come into it?
The Fanfarinets are generally regarded as the most well-known political families in France. They hop from kingdom to kingdom, working as ambassadors for whatever fortunate prince lands himself lucky to marry the next Mayblossom. Their reputation is grand, but their work ethnic is always seen as nothing less than impeccable, so hosting a Fanfarinet family in one's kingdom is seen as honourable. In fact, the only villainous part people see of the Fanfarinets is their unfortunate destiny.

  +
Other
Bastion's mother was the younger sister of the previous Fanfarinet. Ever since her brother got the destiny, Bastion's mother grew distant from him, and didn't even bat an eyelash when he fell from grace.

  +
*Bastion apparently had some skill in chess.
  +
*Knew how to fold pocket squares and tie bowties.
  +
*Had morally-questionable radical values that usually never got brought up in any sort of conversation. Ever.
  +
*Although knowledgeable in both politics and economics, Bastion Fanfarinet truly gave no cares to either. His knowledge in both was a result of his family forcing their ideals onto him.
  +
*At one point, you could pay him to grammar-check your essays. You could also pay him extra to give commentary on the content of your essay.
  +
**He had inadvertently made half a dozen people cry from such commentary.

Fairy Tale: The Princess Mayblossom
It was unknown whether the previous Fanfarinet fathered any children, and no one really wanted to bother to find out. Instead, the fairytale authorities deemed that the next Fanfarinet should be someone related to the previous one, and picked Bastion.

  +
{{quote|As the nephew of the previous Ambassador Fanfarinet, Bastion was expected to follow in his uncle’s footsteps. Thus, the princess was put into a tower to prevent any harm to her.

King Merlin sent his ambassador, Fanfarinet, to make an offer for his son, but Mayblossom swiftly fell in love with Fanfarinet instead, and convinced him to run away with her, taking her father's dagger and her mother's headdress.
His parents were fine with that, and oddly, only slightly delighted when, after the WTW events, he didn't have to follow his destiny anymore.

Opinion on Destiny
Obviously, Bastion doesn't like his destiny. There's little to like about deceiving pretty girls, plotting to murder them only to get killed yourself. Also, being the next Ambassador? It makes him a villain, which clashes with the charming politician image he was born to portray.

  +
A chancellor realised that the princess was missing, and the nurses told him about the princess and Fanfarinet. They later found from a man that he rowed the couple to an island.
However, above all, Bastion is a Fanfarinet, and there's something honourable about living your family legacy, even if it means laying down your life.

  +
At the island, you probably expect the Ambassador and the Princess to be happy. Nah. Turns out that Fanfarinet was actually a huge jerk, a lazy arse, and wasn't very nice to the princess at all. Later, while the admiral men land on the island to search for Mayblossom and Fanfarinet, Mayblossom made Fanfarinet invisible with her mother's headdress, and he ended up killing the men.
Still, Bastion expresses no strong opinions either way, although he is aligned with the Rebels. This is because he wants to seem amicable towards most of the student body, and wants to seem confident and alluring and self-assured. Showing people his inner turmoil? That is unspeakable.

  +
Later, Fanfarinet turned on the princess, about to kill her as well, but instead Mayblossom stabbed him in the face and threw him down a cliff.
Unfortunate Parallels
*Bastion is charming and approachable, mirroring how Fanfarinet was attractive at first.

*His fear of knives is due to how Mayblossom will stab him in the future.

*Bastion hangs out with a witch, Miraspella die Hexe, while Fanfarinet is the ambassador to a wizard (King Merlin).

  +
When Mayblossom went home, her 20 years were up, and ended up married to King Merlin's son, who was hella rad.
Relationships
Family
How to describe the Fanfarinet family? A French aristocratic family previously held in high esteem, the Fanfarinets' reputation took a blow ever since the very first Princess Mayblossom was taken by the very first Ambassador Fanfarinet.

  +
How does Bastion come into it?
They recovered that reputation, of course. Over generations, they became one of the most influential diplomatic families in France. In fact, it became an honour to host the Fanfarinets in your kingdom, because it ensured your prince marriage to the next Princess Mayblossom.

  +
The Fanfarinets are a small family of international diplomats, whose villa is generally based in Annecy, France. Their children and relatives are often sent to serve prestigious Francophone Kings and Queens (one of which would be their generation’s King Merlin). With a grand reputation, and a work ethic seen as nothing less than impeccable, it is seen as an honour to host a Fanfarinet (particularly if your lucky family was destined to join with that of the Mayblossoms.)
Unfortunately, a family can recover from a crime-stained reputation, but very rarely can they recover from forementioned crime. Disguised behind sharply creased suits and well-meant trade agreements, behind closed doors and under-the-table payments, the Fanfarinets are nothing less than corrupt politicians. Payments of gold are sent off to dragon hoards, goblins in the British Isles and Swiss Banks, while the family indulge in their comfort and luxury.

  +
Simply put, Bastion was the previous Fanfarinet’s nephew. His mother, Elise Fanfarinet, was the younger sister of Jacques Fanfarinet, who fathered no legitimate children. Despite the Fairytale Authorities creating a consistently updated list of his children, they instead pushed the destiny onto Bastion. Such a decision was due to the actions of a certain Elise Fanfarinet, who believed it was cruel to subject another’s child to the destiny, and offered up her own instead.
People adore them though. Two professional working parents, two beautiful and clever kids. The ideal modern family.

Parents
They're both lovely people. On the outside, at least, because on the inside, they're just really corrupt politicians.

  +
Unfortunately, such a sacrifice was practically useless. With the events of WTW, Raven Queen absolved everyone of destiny, and no longer did the Princess Mayblossom fairytale have to be followed. What a cruel twist of irony.
His mother was the sister of the previous Fanfarinet, born with a superiority complex. Knowing that her brother would take over the destiny, she strived to be better than him in every aspect, so that she would pass on the legacy of their family name with grace and dignity. She was ambitious and dedicated, educated and erudite, serving as a fine French diplomat in foreign affairs, rallying treatries and policies and other information between countries and recieved many accolades for that.

  +
Opinion on Destiny
It was through foreign affairs that she met Bastion's father, an ambassador from Asia who visited her kingdom on a business exchange. He had a fondness for music and encouraged his son to be just as musical. Thus, he's the main reason why Bastion's talented in three instruments, with a nice voice to boot. He holds his son in high regard, and wants him to achieve as much as possible.

  +
When Bastion had been the next Ambassador Fanfarinet, he learned to play the role of the villain. He was fantastic at theory, marginally decent in practise, and led himself to believe that there was little to like about himself and that he deserved the death that destiny planned for him. Although he never ethically agreed with his role, he thought it would have been better to play it well and draw less attention to himself.

  +
After all, he had major respect for Madame D’Aulnoy. To him, she was representative of everything grand about the genre, so to serve in one of her tale’s and carry on the legacy was an evil, but required, burden of a duty.
How do they feel about their son being the next Ambassador? It was destiny and tradition, after all. They're have a second child already, too, so there's no worry about losing the family name.

  +

Unfortunately for Bastion, he had always felt like his parents practically dressed him up to die. They never expected much from him, as long as he presented nicely and got decent grades. Because of that, Bastion always felt expendable, as if he didn't matter in the family, as if all his achievements, once he died, will be forgotten and he would be uncared about.

  +
When Raven Queen released everyone from destiny, it was both a blessing and a curse. Bastion had detested his role and everything it stood for, and for a brief moment, he was thrilled to be absolved of it. Yet, in the same magnitude as the thrill, came the crushing realisation that he had nothing to ‘’live’’ for. He grew to hate the person he had become, and was strick with fear that this was the person he had to live with for the rest of his life.
He's torn up in guilt, because he knows that his parents have given him enough and more than enough to live comfortably for the first twenty years of his life and doesn't want to leave and be an inconvenience, but he doesn't feel like he matters as part of the family other than as a vessel to continue the family legacy.

Sister – Adelaide Fanfarinet
Adelaide is Bastion's 14 year old sister. Although a cynical butthead, she is a brilliant orator, and writes like she's running out of time.

  +
Furthermore, when he was the Ambassador Fanfarinet, he knew how life would turn out. He knew exactly what would happen, exactly what he would do, exactly what people expected. Now, without destiny, the future became uncertain to him, and due to that, he wasn’t even sure why he was still alive.
It was always Adelaide with the expensive tutors, Adelaide who they invested in scholarships for, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide. When it came to conversations with the parents and representing parliaments and all that, it was Adelaide who got a major say in those discussions, and Bastion who was shoved aside.

  +
Stuck between wishing for both a future and at the same time, a funeral, Bastion had spent the past few months struggling with his own identity. Only after the events of The Manhunt did he begin to see a way out.
There is tension between these two obviously. It was weird for Bastion, to be living in the shadow of a younger sister, when by all means, it should have been him in the limelight of their parents – the one with the legacy, the older brother.

  +

Still, Bastion does care about his sister and he does want her to achieve, even at his own expense.

  +
Parallels
I guess that's what happens when you spend the majority of your teen years thinking you're worthless, huh.

  +
More like anti-parallels.
Uncle (Previous Ambassador)
  +
*Bastion’s uptight and unapproachable manner was a direct contrast to Fanfarinet’s supposed charm and approachability.
Bastion never met his uncle, obviously. When the man died he left no instructions, just a legacy to protect. Despite dying before Bas' birth, his uncle has shaped a huge portion of Bas' life.

  +
*He could not swim. Fanfarinet was presumed to drown, had he not died from the height.

  +
*Bastion would hardly eat, or frequently forget to eat (it is assumed that he may have had an eating disorder) – a contrast to how Fanfarinet was greedy and demanding.
First of all, Bastion is expected to follow in his uncle's footsteps, just like all the previous Fanfarinets. Obviously that's not something that Bastion would like to do, but it's something that his uncle was really proud of being, from all the stories Bas has heard about it. That's something really off-putting for Bastion, because "how on earth am I related to this guy?" and "out of all the people, you expect me to be like <u>him??</u>"

On a serious note, Bastion knows more about his uncle than he wants to know. More importantly, he knows that this is not the man he wants to emulate. Unfortunately, Bastion's convinced that people will only be defining him by his destiny in the future, and knows that if that happens, then he'll simply be a name mentioned alongside that of his uncle.

Other Family Members
Although Bastion's family is generally loving, it doesn't stop the fact that, in the end, they are a crime family.

Friends
EAH Premier Debate Team
Pythia Adalinda: They're friends over the fact that they're both villainous legacies, yet, they have otherwise kind and candid political families (or so Bastion thinks).

Bastion is lowkey jealous of Pythia, because she always stands up for and is outspoken about her strong beliefs. There's no mystery or concealment behind what causes she stands for – she's completely honest. In a sense, I suppose, Bastion wishes he could be like that, being say whatever he believes in.

Charmaine Lexwington
In the rush between class periods, a certain fairy crashed into our favourite ambassador, getting caught in his arms, and naturally, Bastion had to make a really bad pick-up line. Min, although being a total catch, punched Bas. In the face. And from then on, immediately dubbed him the dude with the terrible pick-up lines.

They kept on running into each other – at the coffeeshop, in the hallways, until the two wised up and decided to apologise to each other. So they did and that was chill, and from then on, they became friends.

Friends who poke fun at each other and jokingly flirt, but hey, still friends, right?

Miraspella die Hexe
Seat buddies for General Villainy. Bas once made a throw-away line about Spella's missing eye, Spella punched him, it became a recurring joke and they became friends. Kinda. Mostly they just make fun and mock each other in class. Bastion happily deals with that though. It's better than having no friends at all.

Bathilda Waits
Bastion met Bathilda through Miraspella when she introduced her through Dead Epics Society, and thought the next Waiting Maid was pretty cool. Unfortunately, Bas still acts like an mix between a chill government official and an uptight prick around Batty. Even his fellow villains aren't able to break the emotional barrier Bas puts around himself.

Dead Epics Society
He's their favourite charming frickboi.

Airmid Valerian: Dead Epics meetings usually result in Airmid yelling at him all the time. The two do have quite a bit in common, both being legacies that die because of a princess, and complain about that aspect of their destiny together.

Icarus Juniper: Icarus thinks Bastion is, at the most, average, and at the least, confusing. The two hardly have much in common so they don't really talk.

Unfortunately, Bastion is under the impression that he needs to impress both Airy and Iccy, leading to him being their awkward third wheel. Neither of them like him that much though.

Pet
Bastion has a white cat named Louis Purrteur. Louis Purrteur gets the finest treatment from Bas, including expensive cat foods and the most elaborate of cat climbing towers.

Romance
Tricky subject.

Short answer: Bastion hates it.

Long answer: Bastion really hates it.

That's not to say Bastion won't flirt. In fact, Bastion flirts with everyone all the time! He's practically a flirt machine! Basically, Bastion is totally okay with flings and joke relationships, but anything that begins to move towards the romantically-emotional territory absolutely terrifies him. His destiny is a huge affect on that, since he's grown a fear of getting attached to people, and would probably run away in the exact opposite direction if someone was actually into him.

Is he afraid of hurting that person, or he is just afraid of hurting himself?

No one really knows.

This is Bastion Fanfarinet we're talking about.

*Bastion is a diminutive of Sebastian, which means "venerable" or "respected". The 'Bas' part of Bastion sounds like amBASsador.

Quotation1 Talk less. Smile more. Don't let them know what you're against or what you're for.

Aaron Burr, Hamilton – Aaron Burr, Sir.

Bastion Fanfarinet [he/him] is the nephew of Ambassador Fanfarinet from the Princess Mayblossom, a fairytale by Madame D'Aulnoy.

At fourteen, he was chosen to follow in his uncle’s footsteps as the next villain of the fairytale. However, during the events of The Manhunt, Bastion managed to find his cousin – his uncle’s son – to take the role instead.

Character

Personality

Quotation1 God hath given you one face and you make yourself another.

Hamlet, III.I

Back in Ever After High, people didn’t really know Bastion Fanfarinet. And certainly, he didn’t really want to be known.

Externally, he had appeared proper, serious and boring. His decorum and etiquette was impeccable, he hardly stumbled over his words or made a fool of himself. He was rule-biding, loyal to his fairytale author, and in a phrase, lawful neutral.

And certainly, beneath his lawful surface, Bastion Fanfarinet did harbour several radical values. He had never made these clear or revealed them during his lifetime, due to his pushover nature and his constant desire not to draw notice to himself.

Bastion Fanfarinet never particularly wanted to be remembered. He had wanted everyone who knew of him to forget about him. He had wished that his name would fall into obscurity.

Without a doubt, this final wish has been fulfilled.

Appearance

Quotation1 There are daggers in men's smiles.

Macbeth II.III

Bastion had looked like one of those impossibly perfect people with their life together. Although he certainly never had a life, but with a certain pretty boy charm, being well-dressed and well-put together, he was good at faking that appearance.

He had been slim, concerningly so. Although of average height, his skinniness had given him the appearance of being taller than he was.

His face had been uncannily symmetrical and he had a decent looking jawline. He hardly smiles – a shame, for if he did, one would notice he had dimples.

Hobbies, Interests, Extracurriculars

Perhaps Bastion was most well-known for being a member of one of EAH’s Premier Debating Teams. He had been in the team with Pythia, and was often joked to be her “right hand man”. Additionally, he had been a representative of Model UN and volunteered to help out with certain charity projects.

His multilinguality of seven languages meant that he was frequently used as a translator for English-poor students at Ever After High. He also played violin for one of EAH’s Orchestras, though he was not particularly memorable for it.

Outside of that, not many people can list any additional information about Bastion did for fun. In fact, one doubts that Bastion Fanfarinet could even comprehend the concept of fun.

Linguistics and Literature

What use was there for seven languages, when one knew he wouldn’t live past his twenties? Was it to merely maintain an educated, cultured appearance? Was it – dare one day – out of interest? Surely, it couldn’t have been a ’’real’’ interest in linguistics, if one never bothered to pick up Latin or Ancient Greek or any root languages?

Fairytales

He adores Madame D’Aulnoy. Praises her and her contributions to the fairytale world to the high heavens themselves. She had been a constant in his life, and reading her tales made him want to strive to preserve her memory in collective fairytale conscience.

Other

  • Bastion apparently had some skill in chess.
  • Knew how to fold pocket squares and tie bowties.
  • Had morally-questionable radical values that usually never got brought up in any sort of conversation. Ever.
  • Although knowledgeable in both politics and economics, Bastion Fanfarinet truly gave no cares to either. His knowledge in both was a result of his family forcing their ideals onto him.
  • At one point, you could pay him to grammar-check your essays. You could also pay him extra to give commentary on the content of your essay.
    • He had inadvertently made half a dozen people cry from such commentary.

Fairy Tale: The Princess Mayblossom

Quotation1 As the nephew of the previous Ambassador Fanfarinet, Bastion was expected to follow in his uncle’s footsteps. Run away with a princess to an island, be a source of distress, and eventually get killed by her. The only part Bastion looked forward to was the ending.

The Manhunt, Chapter One

Princess Mayblossom is born, but a fairytale named Carabosse curses her to be miserable for 20 years. Thus, the princess was put into a tower to prevent any harm to her.

A chancellor realised that the princess was missing, and the nurses told him about the princess and Fanfarinet. They later found from a man that he rowed the couple to an island.

Later, Fanfarinet turned on the princess, about to kill her as well, but instead Mayblossom stabbed him in the face and threw him down a cliff.

When Mayblossom went home, her 20 years were up, and ended up married to King Merlin's son, who was hella rad.

How does Bastion come into it?

The Fanfarinets are a small family of international diplomats, whose villa is generally based in Annecy, France. Their children and relatives are often sent to serve prestigious Francophone Kings and Queens (one of which would be their generation’s King Merlin). With a grand reputation, and a work ethic seen as nothing less than impeccable, it is seen as an honour to host a Fanfarinet (particularly if your lucky family was destined to join with that of the Mayblossoms.)

Unfortunately, such a sacrifice was practically useless. With the events of WTW, Raven Queen absolved everyone of destiny, and no longer did the Princess Mayblossom fairytale have to be followed. What a cruel twist of irony.

Opinion on Destiny

Quotation1 It was a little known fact that Bastion Fanfarinet actually liked his story. Had he not been the heir to its villain, perhaps if legacy was a term nonexistent to him, he might have even cited the Princess Mayblossom as a favourite. There was purpose, there was morality, and there was self-defence in the face of total bastards. He respected that.

After all, he had major respect for Madame D’Aulnoy. To him, she was representative of everything grand about the genre, so to serve in one of her tale’s and carry on the legacy was an evil, but required, burden of a duty.

Quotation1 For the sake of the Princess Mayblossom told to the wider generation, for the sake of this tale reestablishing the once mighty position of Madame D’Aulnoy, Bastion Fanfarinet had once been willing to be begrudgingly dragged by a princess to an island and act like a total arse, simply for the success of the story.

Furthermore, when he was the Ambassador Fanfarinet, he knew how life would turn out. He knew exactly what would happen, exactly what he would do, exactly what people expected. Now, without destiny, the future became uncertain to him, and due to that, he wasn’t even sure why he was still alive.

Stuck between wishing for both a future and at the same time, a funeral, Bastion had spent the past few months struggling with his own identity. Only after the events of The Manhunt did he begin to see a way out.

Quotation1 To abandon a destiny that told me I was only worthy of death clearly meant one thing. I was meant to survive.

Parallels

More like anti-parallels.

  • Bastion’s uptight and unapproachable manner was a direct contrast to Fanfarinet’s supposed charm and approachability.
  • He could not swim. Fanfarinet was presumed to drown, had he not died from the height.
  • Bastion would hardly eat, or frequently forget to eat (it is assumed that he may have had an eating disorder) – a contrast to how Fanfarinet was greedy and demanding.

Trivia

  • Bastion is a diminutive of Sebastion. The “bas” sound in the name alludes to the same sound in ambassador.
    • Fanfarinet, of course, is the name given for the ambassador.
  • Politically, Bastion leant towards respectability politics. He tended to shuffle around issues and was polite to the point of being a pushover.

    • And could swear in nineteen.
    • Except for Russian, he can speak all six of the United Nations' official languages.
  • Although Bastion Fanfarinet was not written as on the autistic spectrum, I have compiled a document discussing this.
