Colors: Blue-greens, cream, and charcoal. Soft orange and yellow as accent colors, with wrought iron and dark silver as their associated metal.
Motifs:
- lanterns- the image of a bioluminescent fish luring prey with its light resembles that of a siren luring sailors to their death. Though Rusalka is not a siren, she is seen as a malignant spirit bewitching the prince by other characters.
- drowning- folkloric rusalki are said to be young women who drowned. There's also a certain irony to a drowning fish...
- the moon- the most famous aria in Rusalka is Rusalka's "Song to the Moon", and Rusalka is repeatedly likened to moonlight. The moon is also responsible for pulling the tides of the sea.
- rue flowers and weeping willows- Rusalka lives in a lake in the middle of the forest. Willows and rue (which symbolizes regret) are tied to Ophelia, and weeping willows bring to mind water and sadness. The Ophelia motifs come from the fact that Ophelia (a character from one Shakespeare's Hamlet) drowns.
- ocean waves and black pearls- these are mostly associated with merfolk / the sea (Merana's heritage) not so much their destiny. The black pearls contrast Rosie's white pearls
Style: Merana makes an effort to dress nicely, as if to compensate for everything they wish they were. Due to their interest in fashion, they enjoy going to thrift stores and picking out items to add a personal touch to. Their style draws from 1920s and 1950s silhouettes, extensively frilly formalwear, and loose, floaty fabrics reminiscent of water. Merana wears a lot of easy-to-remove layers, as they have to be prepared for temperature changes at a moment's notice.
Basic[]
Merana wears a charcoal double-breasted waistcoat, pinstriped in a slightly lighter gray and buttoned with silver crescent moons. The waistcoat has black peak lapels and a pointed bottom. Underneath this, they wear a cream blouse made of silk, with oversized sleeves that puff out before being gathered at the wrist. The wrists and neck are trimmed in large, soft ruffles, while the sleeves steadily take on a turquoise color as they approach the wrists, mimicking the sea and sea foam.
The blouse is tucked into black shorts with rounded slits at the sides, revealing cream ruffles underneath, as well as decorative silver filigree rue flowers and black pearls. Merana also wears black tights underneath the shorts.
For shoes, they wear fabric over-the-knee boots, with a pattern of turquoise ocean waves and cream sea foam. Near the top, there are slits at the sides, letting pleated cream fabric show through. The heels resemble miniature wrought iron lanterns, with a magical soft orange glow inside them. Attached to each are delicate wrought iron chains that twist up and around the boots, and a small anchor charm. Merana has knee guards, also resembling lanterns, with the same wrought iron and soft glow. They are kept in place by two strings of black pearls that attach to each side and drape across the back of their knees.
A floppy charcoal sunhat, with a slice cut out of the brim to mimic a lilypad, sits on their head. Multiple soft blue-green ribbons hang off of it, resembling a willow tree's branches. Two wide ribbons, with rounded edges, hang from the inside of the brim, and are tied together as to secure the hat on Merana. The hat is also decorated with a blue-green bow, a silver crescent moon, and a few small black branches with yellow rue flowers.
They carry their trustworthy enchanted umbrella with them at all times, relying on it to stay hydrated. It is patterned with thick black and cream stripes on the outside, while the inside is covered in orange flowers. There is a black ribbon loop attached to the dark wood handle for convenience's sake. If the situation calls for it, Merana would not hesitate to use their umbrella as a weapon.

they're sleepy and grumpy
Merana wears a comfortable fluffy cream-colored hoodie with plush black bunny ears (that resemble conch shells) attached on top. The inside of the shell ears are robin's egg blue. The oversized sleeves of the hoodie have elbow patches in the form of cute blue seashells. The light blue drawstrings of the hood have fluffy black pompoms attached to the ends. On the back, the hoodie comes with a fluffy black pompom that looks like a rabbit tail. They actually made this hoodie from scratch during their Freedom Year, and still loves it to death. Merana wears long thin black leggings underneath. They also wear a black T-shirt underneath, but it can't be seen from under the hoodie since it's a lot shorter.
