Monarch de Rogue (he/him) is a 2022 introduced character and the son of The Robber Princess and The Third Son, acting as the next Robber Prince. Joining Ever After High after a mass transfer of Brazilian's tales and rhymes, Monarch quickly settled himself as a proud and loud Royal, happy to go along with his destiny but, secretly, still nervous about being forever after stuck with someone who may truly not love him back, since his story is a rare case where the hero marries the villain.

Character[]

Overview[]

Monarch is a seemingly arrogant, stereotypical royal teenager with a notable ego. Thanks to the demands of his story and the incentive to follow destiny, he has grown in an environment where he was allowed to get away with being callous, two-faced and flat-out tricking people for that being what was necessary to fill his future role, but his misbehavior has mostly been limited to just haughtiness. While his mean streak is mostly universally disliked, Monarch himself has always managed to find people who can, at least, see through him and are eager to spend time with the royal boy as long as he's able to hold back some of his ego.

Even if detestable in the outside, he definitely has a softer side who just happens to show off numerous times whenever he seems to get comfortable enough, a side of him which seems to sprout organically and without him noticing, but that quickly fades away back to his pompous kingly ego whenever pointed out, which not only implies he's likely faking a lot of his evil tendencies, but also demands his friends to just let him be and enjoy whenever his true colors appears and shine.

Beliefs[]

Stuck with a destiny that may not truly be all he wants, his loyalty to his legacy has largely defined what he has grown to be as a person, up from his personality, shaping himself to be whatever people believe he needs to be, to also his inner workings, where he tries to shape up his own mind to quietly accept what may not be exactly what he wants. While happy to follow his mother's footsteps, out of joy in making her and his kingdom happy, he's not sure if he's truly able to discard all of his friends, all his positive qualities and imprison several men in his kingdom, ruining his reputation, just for the sake of following the norm.

The prospect of marrying the next Third Son is also scary to him, especially after arriving in Ever After High and witnessing all other royals who have a happily ever after with someone they're bound to live off a great romance with, because unlike other princes, he's not the hero or a prize for the slaying a villain, but a villain himself, to be defeated with the help of a fairy and a trick, so he's basically destined to tie the knot with someone who married him out of revenge, not love, and having to relive the distant relationship his parents had with one another, now as a component, is something that is hard, if not impossible, for him to just suck it up.

However, he's also aware of the implications of not following his destiny: The lineage of Robber Princesses was never meant to rule the kingdom, as tyrannical as they are, and only the next Third Son will be able to continue the prosperity and control the kingdom has up until now, so giving up his tale may mean leaving his peasants to a unknown, dangerous demise which he is simply not able to, so he has learnt to cope with the impossibility of writing up his own story, even when the rebel cause stirs something up his heart, mainly the desire to live up a timely romance.

Deep down, he wishes he could dish out completely his destiny and act more like himself, in hopes people will appreciate him more if he's being himself, and to also be generally kinder and reward people who stuck up along with him even while he had to keep up appearances, but this seems like a distant utopia for him, and he mourns for the fact he'll have to distance himself from everyone to go along with his story.

Interests and Skills[]

Akin to his predecessors, Monarch is forcibly interested in himself and his own appearance: being vain is part of his destiny, and he takes time in taking care of his looks, specially his legs, not only because they do play a part on his story, but also because he does enjoy them. However, since he's the next Robber Princess, his vanity means nothing has mostly no one will ever pay attention to his beauty, except for, maybe, his destined one, probably the Third Son.

Since his destiny involves raising a garden full of beautiful cabbages, he has a large interest on gardening and the skill to go with it. Usually, he puts aside his destined cabbages in favor of growing beautiful flowers, fruit trees, other vegetables and even mushrooms, all of which he's easily able to bring along thanks to his expertis. Thanks to this and his general love for green, he has a good reputation among the eco-friendly students of the school, and animals specially like him, so he has all the reasons in the world to keep going on his hobby.

As a future ruler, he's smart enough to get good grades, and has a special interest in any subject that involves kingdom management, specially wealth management, even if his status as the true ruler will only last until the end of his story. Despite being mediocre at sports, he's a very good game analyst. While blessed with the power of luck in gambling, he actually doesn't enjoy playing cards on anything of the matter because it is too "bland" for his taste.

Appearance[]

Monarch is a teen male of moderate height, light brown skin, ebony eyes and chestnut brown hair styled into a curtained hairstyle. He tends to wear clothes in shades of green, yellow and blue and accessorizes himself with gold and silver jewelry and crowns, with all of his clothes leaving at least one of his legs exposed.

Fairytale – The Robber Princess[]

How the Story Goes[]

There was once a father who had three sons: the oldest one planted a orange tree, the middle one planted a lime tree and the youngest one planted a lemon tree. One day, the oldest son went to the father and said he was already old enough to go on his own to explore the world; the father asked the son not to go, but he insisted, so the father let him go and asked if he wanted to go with a blessing and a small sum of money or with a curse and a large sum of money, he picked the curse. Before leaving, he warned his brothers that if his orange tree ever died, he was in danger and his brothers should seek to help him.

After traveling very far, already hungry and tired, he found smoke coming out of a chimney and went ahead to find a castle, where lived a princess, who gave him food. After dining, the princess escorted him to her garden, who was filled to the brim with cabbages, and, while passing over a small bridge inside the garden, lifted her skirt just enough to show off one of her legs to the brother. After showing her garden, she asked what he liked the most about it, and when he answered he liked the cabbages, she asked him to play cards with her, where she made him bet and lose all his money, and them asked her guards to imprison him and feed him only cabbages.

Back home, the orange tree died, and the middle brother immediately told the father he would go seek his brother, who was in peril, the father reluctantly agreed and asked if he would rather have a blessing and a small sum of money or with a curse and a large sum of money. He chose the curse, and warned the younger brother to go help him if his lime tree died. Following the same path as his older brother, he found the princess' castle, where she gave him food and escorted him through the garden, again lifting her skirt, and again asking what he liked the most about the garden and, once the brother answered he liked the cabbages, she too made him play cards and took all of his money, imprisoned him and forced the guards to feed him only with cabbages.

When the lime tree died, the younger brother told the father he'd leave to find his brothers, and the dad once more asked if his child wanted a blessing and a small sum of money or with a curse and a large sum of money, he chose the blessing. On his way, he was greeted by a old woman, a fairy in disguise, who asked what he was up to, and when he revealed he was going to save his brothers, she gave him a tablecloth and told him to open it when he felt really hungry, a sack that served the same purpose and a fiddle, that she instructed him to play after using up the two other objects when he felt really hungry again. He thanked her, went along his way and ended up in the princess' castle.

Given food and escorted through her garden, with her once again lifting her skirt, she asked him what he liked the most about her garden, and he answered he liked her legs. She smirked, asked him to play card, stripped off his money and imprisoned him. When her maiden went to the prison to give the prisoners food, he refused to accept the cabbages and opened up his tablecloth, magically making a enormous banquet appear, enough to feed the many, many prisoners there.

The maiden told the princess about the tablecloth and said she was the one who should own the tablecloth, and the princess ordered the maiden to ask if the younger brother would sell the cloth to her, and he said he would only give it to her if she allowed him to sleep at her room, with her. It offended the princess, and she refused. The other day, he once more refused the food and opened the sack, sprouting another banquet and prompting the maiden to tell the princess once more.

The princess wanted to buy the sack, but the younger brother said he'd only give it to her if he could sleep in her room with her, and she finally agreed, with the insistence of the maiden. The other day, when she went to deliver food, the brother played the fiddle and the maiden started to dance along with the prisoners, prompting the princess to go seek her after she took so long to come back. The maiden told the princess about the fiddle, and when the princess asked if she could buy it, the younger brother said she'd give it to the princess only if she married him. The princess agreed reluctantly, they married, the younger brother became the prince and all the prisoners were freed.

Relationships[]

Family[]

Monarch is the son of the Robber Princess and the Third Son. While very close and adored by his mother, his relationship with his father is strained to say at least, as his parents share a unhappy marriage dictated by the flow of their story, but they certainly don't hate each other, even if they are mostly indifferent to each other.

Friends[]

None at the moment.

Pet[]

Since most Brazilian tales characters weren't around for the animal calling, most of them don't have pets, this is the case for Monarch.

Trivia and Author Notes[]

  • Monarch clothing is a reference to Brazil's imperial family clothing from before the republic, and his color scheme itself is a nod to the color of the Brazilian flag.
    • The gay flag is present on his color scheme, as well, but this wasn't intentional at first.
  • His ethnicity is pardo, a mixed race that constitutes a ethnic group in Brazil. Both of his parents are mixed race, as well.
