Spoilers for The Blue Bird and The Betrothal by Maurice Maeterlinck ahead.

Le Pays Bleu (the Blue Country) is a realm in the fairy tale world. It is home to the divine beings featured in The Bluebird and The Betrothal and includes its very own beforelife and afterlife. Unlike other realms like Wonderland and Neverland, the Blue Country cannot be readily accessed through natural pathways. Mortals can only travel to it through portals opened by a divine being (or someone in possession of the magic diamond). It is Morganite BĂŠrylune's home world.

Palace of Night[]

The Palace of Night contains spirits responsible for many of the world's problems, such as the Wars, Illnesses and to a lesser extent, ghosts and shades that have been captured by Night. They are categorized and placed into vaults sealed off by large copper doors only accessible with one of Night's keys.

Residents[]

  • Silence: A primordial deity who manifests as the starry sky above Night's Palace. Her daughter Night consults her in times of need.
  • Night: Overseer of mysteries and wrangler of spirits.
  • Sheshta Evensong (Death): The palace's quiet bookkeeper.
  • Siesta Evensong (Sleep)

Land of Memories, Land of the Ancestors & Kingdom of the Future[]

  • Land of the Ancestors: This is the Blue Country's very own afterlife. Each soul is given property based on their life’s biggest achievement and undergoes reverse aging. The longer a soul has been in this realm, the younger they appear.
    • Land of Memories: A section of the Land of the Ancestors which houses the souls of people who are still remembered by the living. There is a dovecot in the main square of this area which contains many colorful birds. However, they cannot leave this Land without dying.
  • Kingdom of the Future: A land where everything comes in shades of blue. Home to the souls of children of the future. The younger a child in realm appears, the closer it is to his or her birthday. Each child must figure out a purpose in life before being born. Otherwise, they'd be assigned one by Time. The purposes range from novel inventions to deadly diseases.
    • Adobe of the Children of the Future: A district that is home to the potential BĂŠrylune children of every possible timeline.

Residents[]

  • Time: A ferryman in charge of managing and transporting the souls of children to be born.
  • Fate: Fate is the only non-humanoid being in this realm, with an appearance resembling a marble tesseract with a face all covered by a veil. His size is normally very large but whenever a major event in their world is about to happen, Fate begins to shrink in the days leading up to it. His voice and intellect goes from that of a wise old man to a whiny child within a matter of days. He oversees the domain of the Joys and Luxuries.
  • The BĂŠrylunes’ deceased family members

Enchanted Forest[]

The forest is inhabited by talking trees and various woodland animals. There is a graveyard in the forest which seems to have no bodies. Opening any of the sarcophagi would only reveal beds of flowers. There are in fact non-human remains under the form of strange marble statues standing over each sarcophagus. This is the family cemetery of the BĂŠrylunes. Upon death, a BĂŠrylune may choose his or her best clothes to be solidified with. The statues in the cemetery lack facial features, with the exception of a vague nose.

Fate's Domain[]

Meadows of Joy[]

Palace of Happiness[]

Cave of Sorrows[]

Residents[]

  • The Luxuries: In their glamor form, the Luxuries resemble Arcimbolo’s object portraits. In their true form, Luxuries are sad saggy creatures.
  • The Joys:They are usually created in pairs, often with one twin falling to temptation and becoming a Luxury. In theory, a Luxury can be uncorrupted but most Luxuries don't bother to do the self-reflection needed for this reversal even when banished to the Cave of Sorrows.
