Fall Out Boy - Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea

Varius Ruinosus Caeruleus [he/him], stylicised Ruinous Charming is a Prince Charming, who was chosen for the role of Guenever in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.

Ruinous entered Ever After High with the hexpectation that he'd serve a generic Prince Charming love-interest destiny. This was not the case. He is rather bitter about his assigned destiny, and although refuses to be outspoken about it - aligns Rebel.

Originally created by EmperorPeacock, and later adopted by datAsymptote.

Character

Personality

There is something imperious about this boy - in the way he talks and treats others and their spaces. Is it in his eyes, in how they glare down about you? Is it his stoic expression? Is it how Ruinous takes up space, how he makes his presence in a room known, draping himself on chairs, never sitting properly, and having his trained-cape always fluttering behind him?

Despite this natural tendency to assume command, Ruinous does not strike fear into anyone. If anything, these "attempts" appear laughable - how can this boy act so threatening? Indeed, Ruinous' reputation is just that: nonthreatening. The reason being?

Ignorance. Ruinous seems to be absolutely unknowledgeable about how magic works, and seems rather average when it comes to things grade-wise. With little athleticism, he can't even throw a punch to make up for his seemingly lack of a brain. He pretends to know less, care less, about the Arthurian Legends and associated works than he lets on, and portrays a sense of helplessness that can send Prince and Princess Charmings dashing towards him to extend aid.

He claims that he can't do things for himself - what is laundry, what is cooking except setting fire to the kitchen? Without his camera and his phone by his side, he would appear completely inept.

True subtlety is in plain sight, and Ruinous wants to exemplify just that. It's not that Ruinous isn't clever or adaptable - he very much is. However, showing his true self would be giving up the long con. Ruinous is very much seeking a comfortable, stable life, and being the next Guenever is not that life. Being the next Guenever in a mimic of the 6th century requires wits and survival skills. If Ruinous can portray that he has none, then perhaps the school will finally give up on him for the role.

But isn't it so tedious to wear a crown so oversized? Ruinous has realised that he spent his developmental years acting so untrue to himself. And if he succeeds in his goal, what then? He would have grown a reputation in which very few people would know to take him seriously. Where does one go from there?

Appearance

Ruinous is a young boy of mixed Egyptian and Ashkenazi origin. He has olive skin, and dark brown hair. He also has a prominent nose, and grey-blue eyes.

Interests, Hobbies and Skills

Photography

Ruinous picked up photography during his time at Ever After High, and fell in love with the hobby swiftly, dunking his funds into new lens and cameras. Having his roommate be a fashion designer was a quick and easy way for Ruinous to hone his skills.

Ever since finding out his destiny on Legacy Day, Ruinous became even more obsessive into this hobby, and started getting his photographs printed out as well. If he was going to get sent to a mimic of the 6th century, then he's going to take all the memento he's able to.

Practical Jokes

Being Guenever means getting put in the villain classes, and boy, are villains fun. Ruinous is not one to actually do anything evil, but he found an adoration for lighter forms of rebellion, such as setting up pranks - buckets of waters over doors, swapping salt and sugar.

Other

  • He is, unfortunately, rather addicted to social media and the validation he gives him.

Novel: A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court

How It Goes

Ruinous was assigned the role of Guenever, the Connecticut Yankee version of Guinevere. The novel role does not differ much from the mythological role, though events turn out differently due to Hank Morgan's interference.

As the next Guenever, Ruinous is, of course, destined to bring down Camelot through infidelity.

How Ruinous Comes Into This

The kingdom that reenacts the Connecticut Yankee is small, isolated, and stuck in the past. As per EmperorPeacock's headcanons, each year they hold a bonfire and set aflame any anachronisms. Of course, things like plate armour and chainmail, which did not exist in the 6th century, sneak through, but who is to say that these people know their history?

Given the restrictive size of the kingdom and the nature of some roles, successors do have to be picked, one of which being the role of Guenever.

Ruinous Charming was born to a Egyptian prince who was stationed in Rome. His parents separated rather early in his life. However, his father never remarried until a few years back, to a procurator of Rome by the name of Dolor Leone Tiberia.

Leone... like Leo, the Emperor, or like Leodegrance, Guinevere's father. The thing is, the procurator was not related to Guinevere, but she did have "connections" on the Storybook level. Ruinous was young, nearly highschool age, why not enroll her new son in Ever After High, and hope to land a role?

So, it was set. Enroll the prince in all the Charming classes, play things by ear. Ruinous was lucky enough to get to sign his life away in front of the Storybook of Legends before Raven ripped the book. The catch? He didn't like what he saw.

Opinion on Destiny

Ruinous knew that his stepmother had connections to the Arthurian Legends, but he despises the fact that somehow, he ended up with discount Arthurian Legend. Not only that, he would have to sacrifice his twenties, the youth of his life, to living in a kingdom that mimics the Sixth Century itself. Ruinous is a modern prince, he is a modern boy, and the things he loves are technical - like photography and the MirrorNet.

Not only that, he was promised a destiny, and maybe, along with it, an easy life.

Not only does he have to work now, but with no promised Happily Ever After.

Parallels

  • In some versions of Arthurian Legend, Guinevere is said to be a Roman princess. Ruinous is Roman.
  • His stepmother's nomen is Leone. Guenever's father is Leodegrance.
  • Similar to his step-sister Ablative and her half-sister, Ruinous is a Charming destined for a villainous role. His Magic Touch, likewise, plays off a cartoon villain trope - cool technology.

Trivia

  • Ruinous's name follows the general "Adjective Charming" scheme often seen in canon. Ruinous, as an adjective, was chosen as Guenever brings about the downfall of Camelot. The 'uin' visual in the adjective also furthers the character's connection to Guinevere.
    • Varius is the same prenomen of Elagabalus, a Roman empress. Since Ruinous, being both Roman and taking over the role of a Queen, it seemed fitting to reference Elagabalus. Furthermore, Elagabalus, much like Ruinous, has a penchant for both parties and pranks.
    • The 'Var' sound of "Varius" mimics the "Vere" of "Guinevere".
    • Ruinosus, his nomen, was chosen as a direct Latin translation of "Ruinous".
    • Caeruleus means blue, a reference to the Italian phrase for Prince Charming, "the blue prince". This is similar to how Ablative and Absolute's cognomens are also translateable into "charming". Additionally, the Cae- at the start of the name, along with the "rule" sound tie Ruinous to both Julius Caesar (a motif for Ablative and Absolute), along with the theme of being a "ruler".
