“What’ll it be for the two lovebirds?” A round bearded man with a red and yellow cap asked from behind a hotdog stand.

“Just an Emerald City dog, please.” Replied one Fernando Kazumi. “You know what you want, Conn?”

Conner deliberated. “Honestly, I’m just not that hungry right now.”

Fernando gave his boyfriend a look of knowing tease. Conner was the lightest eater he’d ever met. Never before had he known someone to nibble on crackers, of all things.

But it was okay. Fernando enjoyed getting to be the fitter of the two.

“The dog will take a hot sec, if that’s alright with ya’s?” The hotdog man asked.

Fernando almost took back his order, but Conner spoke up. “That’s alright. He’ll wait here for it.”

“And just where do you think you're going?” Fernando asked him, with playful inquisition.

“Just up to the park. I figure we’re going there anyways. I’ll just head on over and you can join me once you get your precious snack.” He smirked, before turning around to make the walk.

“Well, be careful at least!” Fernando cried to his boyfriend.

“Come on now,” he replied back, “can’t mess it up! It's a literal walk in the park, handsome.” Conner winked at Fernando. Before turning around again, he only said one more thing.

“We’ve got all the time in the world.”

It all happened so fast.

The Beldam. She just. Flew in. Not like Galeforce. She didn’t have powers like him. She only seemed to ride a broom wherever she went. Probably not with real magic. Just some of that new tech Darius Diggs seemed to be putting out.

But that didn’t matter as much right then. What mattered was that she landed in the park that day. After the fact, most of Emerald City would wonder why she chose that time and that place to unleash her evil. But it happened. And no one could’ve stopped it, right?

That didn’t prevent Conner Bonniwell from trying, though. He was there. She was going to hurt other people. He saw it. He had to do something. So he picked up a large branch from one of the planted trees and launched towards her.

But he overestimated himself. Underestimated her. Something was not calculated right, at least.

For an older looking woman, she was fast on her feet. She countered his attack, knocking him to the ground. And at that moment, she truly let Emerald City know what kind of villain she was.

The Beldam picked up the broom she arrived on and just... beat him. Mercilessly. Senselessly. Sadistically. No presentation, no finesse, no lines and no speeches. She just cackled as he laid there, forced to take in the pain.

She could’ve ended him herself right there, with just a few more swings. But she was smart enough to know that the authorities (or the authority - Galeforce himself) would almost certainly be arriving soon. She couldn’t spend all her time on this one boy. Even the son of a famous woman. She had to get her other licks in.

So she simply walked away, to terrorize the others as much as she could.

Conner had hardly managed to crawl behind a small brick fence when Fernando came rushing to his side.

“Fernando!” He cried, attempting to sit up. “You shouldn’t have come. You- you should’ve stayed away. It’s dangerous.”

“Absolutely not. Never. I-” He saw the blood leaking out of Conner’s head. It was a lot. So much was red right now. He grabbed his boyfriend as gently as he could, resting the upper half of his body on his lap.

“We don’t,” Conner paused for a second, gasping heavily. “We don’t have a lot of time. Fercho.” He finally managed to lock eyes with the boy looking above him.”You have to listen. What I’m saying now- what I’m saying now is important. You have to listen. Every word.”

“Conn, please, stop it! You’re bleeding! Just shut up! You’re bleeding, oh God, you’re bleeding. We can get somebody.” He turned his head quickly, looking around the park. Help! Somebody help!”

“Listen.” Conner begged. “Please. Tell my mom I love her. She’s amazing. The best ever.” He paused for a moment, reflecting on everything he knew.

“Oh my God. Yvette. Yvette too. Tell her she’s awesome. She’s my best friend.” He grunted, gritting his teeth for a moment. He couldn’t seem to recall names like he wanted to.

“Uh. Uh. Damon! And William! Alistair, too. They’re so good. You have to make sure they know that. Just make sure everyone knows I value them more than anything. Anything.”

“Conner!” Fernando screamed. “Stop talking! You’re not leaving! Just be quiet and you’ll be alright!”

“Fercho, I love you.” He locked eyes again. “Like, really really love you. I never thought I’d find someone so cute, so loving, so full of life. Oh God. Don’t- you can’t-” he gasped in pain, but fought to keep going.

That was always his way. Fighting. “You can’t let this change you. You’re so pure-hearted and brave and kind and- and you can’t anybody make you... not that. Don’t let them steal the light I love. That wouldn’t be... fair.”

It was strange for the both of them. Conner. The eloquent one. The elegant one. The oldest soul among almost everyone they knew. For once, he seemed to rush through his words. Condensing what he had on his mind into the most important bits seemed to trouble him as much as speaking a foreign language.

“Please, don’t forget what I’m telling you. I need you to promise me you’ll keep this with you. Promise.”

Fernando didn’t like hearing this. That couldn’t be true. They had all the time in the world. Right?

“Please don’t- just please don’t talk like that. Help’s coming! They’ll help you! Just hold on. Please. Just hold on. For God’s sake, hold on, Conner!”

“Fercho.” Conner smiled, looking at the face belonging to the love of his life. “Just look up. The sky. It’s light blue.”

“Baby...” He couldn’t grasp anything about this. “Baby, what are you talking about?”

Yes, of course the sky was blue. Why wouldn’t it be blue? Galeforce wasn’t causing a storm yet. In fact, where was he?

“That’s our color.” He laughed faintly. “Light blue. Y’know. I was wearing it when we met. I also remember what you were wearing, of course. You cute doggy sweater person you. Funny how real life is like that. Like. Y’know. Poetic...”

He was getting quieter. That wasn’t like him. Conner, the son of Constance Bonniwell? Heir to a fashion empire? Cool, confident, stylish? That’s how Conner simply existed. And Fernando loved him for it.

Fernando’s face felt pained. Clenching desperation gripped his entire body.

“You always did love your poems.” He added in slow, delicate words. “Y’know? Songs. I just love it when... we... y’know... dance…”

The moment when two beautiful brown eyes - wise, tender, soft brown eyes... no longer look up at the sky. Not anymore. Frozen

Just as frozen as time was, as noise was for Fernando. Then it all went away.

Slowly, he was beginning to realize that they weren’t alone. Their moment wasn’t as private as he swore it was. Sirens, screams, they began to bleed through. Cutting in.

But he couldn’t let them in. Not yet. He just needed one moment more.

After all, they had all the time in the world.
