A lot of my OCs' first names don't have to do with their stories - I just picked them because I liked them. For me, the last name referencing the story is enough.
I've noticed that, to an extent, I use different naming conventions for royals and commoners. My royalty OCs tend to have more unusual names while my commoners have more ordinary names (and more common IRL). A lot of the names I've used are considered old-fashioned IRL. You don't see too many French people named Isidore anymore.
I have used some meaningful first names, though. Trofimo Pulce's name is the Italian form of a Greek name meaning nourishing, and he's basically nourishing a giant flea. My first wave OC Narcisse Paon has a name referencing narcissism, which is similar to vanity - peacocks are associated with vanity. Phineas Ryan's name comes from P.T. (Phineas Taylor) Barnum, the freak show proprietor, since he's supposed to the next Kinglet, the ruler of Phreex. Emerson Cytryn is named after Emerson College, a college in Boston, where his parent's story (The Magic Bon Bons) takes place.
